Dozens of current and emeritus faculty members affiliated with the University of South Carolina were honored in a recent list of the world’s top-cited researchers in their field.

The study is published annually by Stanford University and Elsevier, an academic publishing company, to determine the world’s top-cited researchers. The University of South Carolina had 148 faculty members across 11 different colleges and schools make the list. That is the highest among in-state universities — with the next best registering just over 100 faculty — and in the top half among SEC institutions.

“I am delighted to see the quality and reach of our faculty’s research across a wide array of disciplines,” says Mary Anne Fitzpatrick, USC’s executive vice president for academic affairs and provost. “The impact of this research can be seen not only locally in South Carolina but also across the nation and across the globe.”

USC’s largest college, the McCausland College of Arts and Sciences, had the most faculty represented with 61, followed by the Arnold School of Public Health (25), the School of Medicine Columbia (15), the Darla Moore School of Business (13) and the Molinaroli College of Engineering and Computing (11).

Other areas represented include: College of Pharmacy (5); Darla Moore School of Business (5); School of Medicine Greenville (5); College of Nursing (2); College of Hospitality, Retail and Sports Management (3); College of Education (2) and the School of Music (1).

“We’re proud that 130-plus USC faculty are recognized in this prestigious listing, which reflects the breadth and scholarly influence of our research enterprise,” says Julius Fridriksson, vice president for research. “Citation metrics provide one important lens on research impact, especially among senior faculty who have spent their careers influencing their areas of study. At USC, we’re proud to honor these senior faculty and to support emerging researchers doing breakthrough work that isn’t yet fully recognized in citation counts."

The latest study incorporates research citation data from 2024 and presents a combined score for each individual researcher. The top 100,000 researchers by score are included on the list as well as those who scored inside the top 2 percent in their specific subfield of work.
